Turkey Swamp Park offers a quieter, more rugged alternative to a typical neighborhood park. The 2,414-acre property sits at the northern edge of the Pine Barrens, with wooded trails winding through pitch pine and oak forest, wetlands, blueberry bushes and stretches of primitive wilderness.

More than eight miles of trails give visitors several options, from a relaxed walk around the lake to a longer hike through the southern end of the park. The 1.6-mile Alder Trail circles the park’s 17-acre lake and is a manageable choice for a shorter outing. Longer routes lead deeper into the forest and toward the Metedeconk and Manasquan rivers.

Dogs are welcome throughout permitted outdoor areas as long as they remain leashed and under control. The park is also one of the area’s more unusual dog-friendly destinations because pets may stay at the family campground. Campsites are available for tents, trailers and motor homes from April 1 through November 15. Dogs cannot stay inside the park’s cabins or at the separate group campground.

The park also includes picnic areas, playgrounds, fishing, seasonal boat rentals, an archery range and open fields. Its mix of lakeside scenery and wooded trails makes it especially appealing for dogs who enjoy longer, quieter walks.
