Take the Long Way
why the best outings with a dog do not always need an itinerary
It is easy to think every day out needs a destination: a trail worth driving to, a dog-friendly restaurant, or somewhere impressive enough to justify the trip. But some of the best afternoons begin with no plan beyond choosing a direction and bringing the dog.
Take the slower road. Stop when you find a quiet path, an interesting town, or a place near the water. Let your dog investigate longer than usual. Bring something to drink and leave enough time that getting home late does not feel like a problem.
A few things make spontaneous outings easier:
- A leash that is comfortable to hold for a long walk
- Water for both of you
- A towel that permanently lives in the car
- A portable bowl
- An old blanket for muddy paws
