Abram S. Hewitt State Forest is some of the wildest hiking in North Jersey. Trails climb steadily over purple puddingstone outcrops to the top of Bearfort Ridge, where pitch pines frame long views of Greenwood Lake, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the forest.

This is a hike for fit, experienced dogs. The footing is rough, and small dogs may need a lift over the hardest sections.

  • Mosquitoes are fierce in summer, and there are no facilities
