Bass River State Forest covers more than 23,000 acres of Pine Barrens, with Lake Absegami near the main recreation area and miles of sandy trails through pine, oak, and cedar woods. The Absegami Trail passes through an Atlantic white cedar swamp, while other trails lead past old Civilian Conservation Corps sites and deeper into the forest. Dogs are welcome on leash on the trails and in most outdoor areas, but they are not allowed on the swimming beach or in the designated swimming water.

Know before you go

  • Dogs are welcome in the picnic area and on the trails, but not on the Lake Absegami swimming beach or in the swimming water.
  • Campsites 1-85 are pet-friendly. There is an additional $5 nightly pet fee, and vaccination documentation is required at check-in. Pets are not permitted in cabins and shelters
  • The forest has 13 marked walking trails, most between about 1 and 3.2 miles, plus access to the much longer Batona Trail
  • Entrance is free after Labor Day through the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Summer vehicle fees vary by residency and day of the week
