G. Thomas Donch Nature Preserve, formerly the Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve, circles a lake with a flat, beginner-friendly loop of about 1.5 miles. It's at its best near sunset, when the water picks up the sky. The trail is well marked, there's a fishing dock, and kayaking is available in season. It's long enough to feel like a real walk without wearing out an older dog.

Know before you go

  • Leashes required.
  • Some trail sections are overgrown or uneven.
  • Parking is usually easy at the trail entrance. If the main entrance is closed, use the side street off High Mountain Rd.
  • Portable toilet only.
