Lucy the Elephant

One of the Shore’s most recognizable landmarks, Lucy is a six-story elephant sitting just off the beach in Margate, surrounded by a small park where you can walk around, get an up-close look and bring your dog along.

Lucy the Elephant has been standing over Margate since 1881, and she’s every bit as strange and charming in person as she looks in photos. The giant wood-and-tin elephant sits in a small park beside the beach, with picnic tables and plenty of angles for seeing the details up close. You don’t need a ticket to visit the grounds, so it still works as a dog-friendly stop even if you skip the interior tour. Inside, guided tours climb through Lucy’s legs into the main structure and eventually up to the howdah on her back, with views across Margate and toward the ocean.
