Ramapo Mountain State Forest is rugged country close to the suburbs. The climb from the Skyline Drive lots leads to Ramapo Lake, where a carriage road circles the water, and side trails head up to the stone ruins of Van Slyke Castle on the ridge. Expect real climbing over steep rock in places. It's a great workout for an athletic dog and too much for a couch potato.

  • Trails are steep and rocky. Wear hiking boots.
  • Two lots on Skyline Dr. The upper lot is closer to the lake.
